Hound run cycle by Hukkanaama Hound run cycle by Hukkanaama
Already shared this on tumblr, but what the hey, let's share it here, too! After all, it is my most successfull animation attempt to date (not that it says much, obviously, but... you know. Gotta start somewhere.) It’s only six frames because I didn’t want to spend my entire day with it (all actual animators can now scoff at me in unison). There are parts I like, parts I don’t and overall it’s quite clunky but mmmm delicious practice omnomnom.

Demonish vampire wolf thingamabob from my webcomic.
Animated in Photoshop
Eadweard Muybridge's dog run cycle used as a reference.

Hi, I was looking for a  run dog cycle and I found yours... very nice.

I´d like to ask you if I can use it in a intro for a music band. I do it for free because the band it´s so good and I´d like to do something for thems. Also I am not a good animator...

Thank you.

Thank you for asking, but I'm going to say no. This is my personal art and I don't want it to be used anywhere else, especially not in association to a band I don't even know.

Eh, I don't see a problem. I can notice some similarities in the leg movement, but it's not like the whole thing is an exact copy so I don't mind.

wow, my animation is 13 frames and is a lot slower. I think you did great :).
This was mine [link]
Im sure that you'll agree that yours is better when it comes to speed. I wanted a faster run cycle. I believe I can learn from this :).

The upside is that mine allows a clear display of anatomy of the species it was based on, for those who are interested in it for learning purposes. I really like yours. I don't care what anyone says. This looks excellent.

I just miss some exaggeration. In the stretch mostly.
and just 6 frames are cool

Yeah, I think you're right. I did try some exaggeration but couldn't get it to look right. I just don't know how it's supposed to be done so that it's not distracting. You wouldn't happen to have any tips?

I'm sorry, I can't compose my brain enough to really explain anything erm but, i think you've used an "inbetween" instead of the "stretchpose", because it's only 6 frames and it's hard to decide which poses to leave out (I seriously love that it's just 6 frames though, hah :D)
With quadrupeds the squash and the stretch is really extra important, and it's really just a matter of how exaggerated you want it. What you did works brilliantly, I just missed more stretch and might very well be wrong, since I don't know what you went for.

I tried it out. Show and tell sorta thing. It's only the back I've done anything to, and only frame 3, the rest I think, works like a charm.
[link] I REALLY hope it's OK i did this, it'll be taken down as soon as you say you've seen it. Couldn't think of anywhere else to post it.

Ah, I think I get what you mean now! :D I did think the back looked a little stiff and that would fix it. Thank you for taking the time to make that example! I've never studied animation so it's all new to me and while I've heard of the squash&stretch principle I didn't really know how to use it, but I think I have a better understading of it now.

we're all learning :D it's always try 'n' error, learn by doing, that kinda thing. Loved looking though your animation, though, thats another way to learn : P Stepframe EVERYTHING! woo.
Anyhow, glad I was understandable, i often isn't xP

I'll be taking it down when I get home then : )

It may be only six frames, but they're very successful frames! I really like what the head and hind legs are doing. Also the follow through on the fur and ears and stuff looks great!

Eadweard Muybridge  I know exactly which run cycle you used

Thank you! Mr. Muybridge's sequences are indeed incredible! I've been looking for a book that has them, but it's kinda hard to shop for one online when you can't look inside the book to see what the contents are like. There seems to be so many books about his work it's hard to choose.

Well, these are the books that I own [link] and they're all very good. Nothing but images :) and one of them even came with a CD that has all the sequences in the book as digital files (I have uploaded most of them here [link] )

Voin sanoa että jos animaatioteollisuudessa saatas näin hyvää liikettä aikaseksi vain kuudella framella, jäis todella hyvin aikaa laadun vaalimiseen. Loistavaa työtä, täytyy sanoa!
